Pool will remain closed for the rest of the day 8/20

Hi swimmers,

It is now 4:45pm and conditions have not improved. AQI has stayed consistent around 190PPM. We are going to remain closed for the rest of today 8/20.

Tonight at 9pm we are going to make a decision about early morning lap swim for tomorrow.

We will be making the decision tonight so our lifeguards do not have to go to sleep not knowing if they will need to be in to open the pool in the morning.

Looking ahead to tomorrow:

Aerobics & Water Polo: Email communication with decision will be made and sent out at 7am

Swim Lessons: Email communication with decision will be made and sent out at 9am

Opening at 1pm: Email communication with decision will be made and sent out at 12pm

Pool Closed Due To Air Quality 8/20 12:30 PM

Hello swimmers,

The pool is closed due to poor air quality 8/20 at 12:30 PM. The AQI has been above 150ppm for the past hour. We are making this decision based on the health and safety of our guards and you, our patrons.

We will be checking the air quality again at 5pm to decide if we can reopen for the evening. It is unlikely we will be able to reopen as forecasts show it staying around this level for the rest of the day.

We have installed a PurpleAir air quality sensor at the pool and will be using that to make our decisions about closing. The most current readings are posted on the website wedgwoodpool.com so you can check there. You can also download the app “air quality reader” which is what our sensor is uploading to. On the app we will be using the PurpleAir AQI tab (found on the bottom of the screen).

We will be updating the website and Facebook with a decision about opening or staying closed at 5pm today.

Thank you all for being flexible and know that this decision is made with the health and safety of all of us in mind.

Thank you,

Mike

August 14th — Whats Happening At The Pool

Hello swimmers,

Mid August – less than a month left to enjoy these hot late summer days at the pool! Looking ahead at the forecast this week, it looks like it is going to be a heater so I am expecting so see many of you coming down for a swim. If you are planning to bring a large group (more than 6) feel free to give us a call at least a day ahead so we can schedule a party for you. This will allow you to bring your guests without using your guest passes (they will still cost $7.50 per guest). By doing this not only will you will save those guest passes, but you will also be helping the staff out by allowing us to plan ahead with scheduling extra guards if we know we are going to have a busy couple of hours at the pool. See you down at the pool and keep reading for some fun stuff to plan ahead for.

Water Show: Coming in hot this week! Saturday night at sundown is when the show begins. We will be closing the pool down at 7:00 PM to get all set up for the big night. Come down for a night of music and dancing put on by your staff and their talented and brave dance squads! **also remember we will be closing at 7:00 PM on Friday 8/18 for the dress rehearsal**

Swim-A-Thon And Labor Day Games: Join us on Labor Day for a morning of fund raising for No More Under.  No More Under is a local non-profit organization dedicated to saving lives through water safety education, legislation, and increasing equitable access to swimming lessons and tools.

Dessert Potluck: Come join the senior pool members on the upper deck Tuesday, August 29th 6:00 – 8:00 PM. Bring and appetizer or dessert to share or just drop by for a gathering of familiar faces, hearty laughs and summer memories of yore.

Outdoor Showers: As per our health department inspection last week, we can no longer use soap at the outdoor showers. I know this has become a favorite spot for those soapy showers for many of you, but to comply with health codes, we are no longer able to do so. Please continue to use them for your pre swim showers and for your post swim showers to rinse off, but keep the soap in the locker rooms please.

August 7th – Whats Happening At The Pool…

Hello Swimmers,

Some exciting news and opportunities for you in this week’s newsletter.

Wedgwood is hosting a swim-a-thon on September 4th (Labor Day) from 8:30AM-12:00 PM to support our non-profit partner, No More Under. They are a local non-profit organization dedicated to saving lives through water safety education, legislation, and increasing equitable access to swimming lessons and tools. No More Under’s founder lost her son, Yori, to a drowning accident in 2018. This tragic and preventable death is one which too many families endure. Through her journey of grief, she created No More Under to ensure other families do not endure a similar tragedy.
No More Under builds free, equitable, learn-to-swim programs. This year they’ve already supported 200 children through lessons, but they have over 800 families on their waitlists desperate for swimming lessons.
How can you get involved?

  1. Sign up to swim laps
  2. Volunteer to be a counter during the Swim-A-Thon
  3. Make a donation

Click Here to sign up to swim laps or volunteer
Swimmers are encouraged to make a donation (flat donations – NOT per lap) or ask others to donate on their behalf. Donations can be made to “honor” a swimmer on the website. Different age groups will have different start times.

  • 12 & Under (8:40AM -9:40AM)
  • 13-18 years (9:50AM-10:50AM)
  • Adults (11:00AM-12:00PM)

We will be following circle swimming rules and have speed signs so that swimmers can select an appropriate lane.

We need volunteers to help count laps for the swimmers participating in the Swim-A-Thon.  You will sit at the end of the lane and be responsible for tallying the laps of all swimmers in your lane.

Click Here to donate to No More Under

100% of the donations will support under-resourced families in learning how to swim!!

Along with the Swim-A-Thon, Wedgwood will be partnering with No More Under to provide a week of intensive learn-to-swim lessons during the last week of August. As part our preparation for these lessons, No More Under will be leading Diversity, Equity and Inclusion trainings for our staff to highlight the importance of these dimensions in aquatics and access to water safety skills and practice.

Water Show: If you are signed up, you should be receiving emails from your team leader about practice times. Keep your eye out for that communication. And for everyone else, don’t forget to come watch the show on Saturday, August 19th starting when the sun goes down! (Dress rehearsal on Friday, August 18th starting around 7:30)

Games start this week and we will be hosting on Thursday, August 10th ***Deep end closing at 4:30 pm on 8/10*** (shallow end will remain open until 9:00 PM) It is not too late to sign up, or to convince a friend to sign up. We are taking both members and non-members! If you are interested or have any questions, please email wedgwoodwaterpolo@gmail.com

Labor Day Games: We will be bringing back some old favorites on Labor Day this year! From 2:00 PM – 4:00 PM on Labor Day, Monday, September 4th we will be putting on a few games in and around the pool. July 31st – Whats Happening At The Pool

Hello Swimmers,

Election season is upon us, not just in Seattle, but for our Wedgwood Pool Board as well. While our elections won’t be held until November, it is time to think about running for a pool board position. Take a look at this message from our board about open positions and how to enter into the election process for the board:

Seeking Pool Board Members!!

The Wedgwood Swim Pool Board of Directors has appointed a Nominating Committee to recruit interested candidates for election at the November 2023 Annual Meeting.  In accordance with the Pool Bylaws, only full members are eligible to run for the Board.

There will be 4 positions available:

Communications Committee Chair

Landscaping Committee Chair

Maintenance Committee Chair

Treasurer

Candidates for the Board are not running for a particular position, but rather are being elected to serve the membership as a whole.  The Pool Bylaws (available under the “documents” section of the Members Only database (http://circus.wedgwoodpool.com/) outline the various committees and the responsibilities of being a member of the Board.  A separate document “2023 Open WSP Board Positions” on the Members only database contains descriptions of the duties for each of the four open positions.

The Board serves as stewards of the Pool and its welfare so we hope you will consider it as a place to share your time and talent!

If you are interested in running for a position, or have questions about what is involved, please contact any of the committee members (Mee Moen, Cindy Katz or Molly Martin) for more information.  You may also email the committee at:  wspnominate2023@gmail.com

The deadline for interested parties to submit names for consideration is September 15th

Thank you!

Adult Swim Team: Big shout out to all you adult swim team swimmers! We had a big group of adults swimming hard and smiling even harder at the adult meet on Saturday. Your hard work paid off with all fast swims and fun that was had. Wedgwood took home 2nd place and I think we set our sights on that 1st place trophy for next year!

Water Polo: Season about to commence! Practices start on Wednesday August 2nd. The season will run from the first week of August through August 31st.

The practice schedule is as follows:
12 and under- Tuesday and Thursday 9:00 AM – 9:30 AM (potential games on Friday mornings)
13 and up- Monday – Thursday 8:00 AM – 9:00 AM
Games for 13 and up will be Tuesday and Thursday nights.
The sport is great, our coaches are fun and experienced, and Wedgwood water polo will be a great way to stay active in the water for the month of August. If you have friends who are not members who would like to try out the sport, we are taking non-members for the season. For the most up to date information follow @wedgwoodwaterpolo on Instagram and email wedgwoodwaterpolo@gmail.com

Swim Team Banquet: This Wednesday August 2nd starting at 5:00 PM (Pool closing at 4:00 PM). Come down and celebrate our swimmers on their hard work and accomplishments this year and give our seniors a final send off. We love you seniors – your time, dedication and care given to Wedgwood over the years is what make this team so special!

Water Show: Time to show off you dance moves! Sign ups are posted in the lobby, your choreographers will be contacting you soon with practice schedules and dance moves to practice. Performances will be dress rehearsal on 8/18 at 7:00 PM and the big show on 8/19 at 7:00 PM. And ill say it again to all you adults because I assume it is you reading these emails, there used to be a wonderful show put on by the parents of the pool each year and I would love to bring that tradition back!

Lap Swimming Etiquette: Coming off a week with a few head on collisions in the lap lanes I think it is time to refresh our lap swimming practices. With 2 people in a lane, you may split it (each person stays on one side of the black line). If and when a third person joins the lane you must circle swim. Circle swimming means you treat the lane like a road, always staying on the right hand side of the lane. If you are the 3rd person in the lane, you must get the attention of the other two swimmers so they are aware that you are joining and you all will be circle swimming. Communication is key in all aspects of life, and especially in lap swimming so you can avoid a high speed head-on collision during your swim!
 Circle Swim Diagram
Don’t Forget Your Pre-Swim Shower: It is that time of summer where we all want to be down at the pool all the time, I love it. Help us all out by taking a good rinse before getting in, it might not seem like it does much, but it really is helpful in keeping the pool clean and running smooth. Our showers are warm and we even have them right by the shallow end so taking those extra few beats to shower off won’t take away from your swimming time.

July 24th – Whats Happening At The Pool…

Hello swimmers,

It has been hot and you all have been using the pool. It has been great having so many of you down at the pool! End of July approaching which means the end of the swim team season is near, the adult team is about to put a clinic on at the adult meet, water polo is just around the corner and if you squint you can see the water show starting to take form. A little information about all of this and a few other things coming your way.

Guests: Bring your guests down to the pool to enjoy, but make sure you are paying for them. We have had an uptick in the amount of people who are attempting to not pay for their guests. If you bring someone who is not a member of the pool you must pay the guest fee. Each membership is allotted 20 guests at $7.50 per guest. After the initial 20 have been used each guest is $9.50 per swim.

Water Aerobics: More classes coming your way! Starting on August 5th water aerobics will be running:

Monday, Wednesday, Friday 8:00-8:45AM

AND

Monday-Friday 12:05-12:50PM

So that means you can do water aerobics two a days on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday!

Adult Meet: It is almost time to race! Saturday July 29th at Innis Arden is when you get to show of your speed. Sign up forms posted in the lobby. Register for your races by Thursday July 27th. If you have participated before, you know how much fun the meet is. If it is your first time, come check it out. Who knows, you might find a new passion for racing!

Water Polo: Coming in fast! The season begins on August 5th. If you have not filled out the google form yet please do so. Linked here:

WWWP Interest Form

This will give us the info we need to confirm the practice schedule and the age groups we will fielding teams for. Right now it looks like we will have 12u, 14u and 18u teams. Practices will be held in the mornings before 9:30 (but we have not confirmed exact times yet). If you have any questions about water polo please email Head Coach Ruby at wedgwoodwaterpolo@gmail.com

Adult Party/Almost Anything Goes: Open to any and all members. On the top deck there will be food and drinks for the adults, and down below the kids can enjoy some snacks and floatie time in the pool. I can’t think of a better way to unwind after a morning of fast swimming (if you choose to swim in the adult meet).

Water Show: Save the date, August 19th when the sun goes down! Sign up sheets posted in the lobby. The theme this year will be WEATHER so come prepared. I haven’t been around for a water show at Wedgwood for some years, but I do fondly remember the adults of the pool putting on something special to try and match the talent of the kids… So if any of you adults are feeling footloose, creative, and like you want to get a group together let me know and ill add an adult group to the line up!

Swim Team: Big week for our swimmers coming up! Girls prelims on Monday at View Ridge, Boys Prelims on Tuesday at Sand Point, and Northern Divisions on Thursday at Klahaya. If you are swimming, good luck! And go cheer on our swimmers if you have the time!
